Course Content
Mechanical engineering focuses on technical courses in mechanics, fluid dynamics and materials science. There are also courses in the design and manufacture of products, machines, and structures. Courses in costing and personal development complete the programme.
- Contact moments 20 hours a week
- Self-study 20 hours a week
- Possible additional costs per year €1300 for books and other study material
The first year
Broad technical foundation and hands-on experience
The first year includes courses such as statics, fluid dynamics, materials science, and manufacturing engineering. You will also develop your presentation and reporting skills by applying your new technical knowledge to practical projects. These projects, combined with company presentations and visits, will give you an insight into the work of a mechanical engineer.

Technical skills development for projects
The second year is a mix of understanding energy systems, materials selection, automation and robotics, drive engineering, control theory, mathematical modelling, thermodynamics, and design projects. Your knowledge from these courses will be applied in projects on methodical design and sustainable design.
- Dynamics
- Material Selection
- Automation and Robotics
- Drive Engineering
- Control Theory
- Mathematical Modelling
- Thermodynamics
- Sustainable Energy Systems
- Engineering Projects
The third year
Make your own decisions
The third year consists of a minor and the Smart Solutions Semester (3S). In the minor, you will develop your technical knowledge in a specific area, such as Advanced Materials Production Engineering or Engineering of Energy Systems. During the 3S project, you will work with a group of students from a variety of backgrounds to solve real-world problems.
The fourth year
Preparation for working in Engineering
The fourth year consists of an internship and graduation. The internship will take place in an engineering company of your preference. During the graduation project, a design or research assignment will be carried out at Saxion or at an engineering company of your interest.
Diploma: Bachelor of Science (BSc)
Successful graduates can use the title Bachelor of Science. In general, graduates in mechanical engineering start out as design or construction engineers. They then progress within companies to become more experienced engineers.
