Medical care in the Netherlands is of high quality. Since the costs for treatment can be very high, it is important to be properly insured, especially if you need specialist help from the hospital.

In the Netherlands, you need to see the family doctor first before you can get a referral for a specialist in the hospital (except for emergencies, please see First Aid section below).

First Aid 

If you need urgent medical care, you can get help 24 hours a day at the local hospital. (For life threatening situations, call 112! (more information below)) 

Always call the emergency room first! They will advise you on what to do. If you go to the emergency room in the Netherlands and the situation is not seen as urgent, the costs will not be covered by your insurance.
