Construction of Climate Square about to begin
It’s finally going to happen: construction of the climate square at Saxion’s main location in Enschede! Last year the Executive Board gave the go-ahead for the creation of a new climate-proof square at the Ko Wierenga building. Building contractors NTP together with other stakeholders are responsible for the completion of the square. Sustainability is a key priority at both NTP and Saxion.
Start and completion of work
Construction work will begin around the end of April/start of May and continue until the end of the summer holidays. The work will be carried out in stages to ensure minimum disturbance. We will experience some disturbance such as minor noise nuisance and sometimes having to take a detour on site. However, the square will remain accessible to all and lectures and exams will go ahead as planned. From the start of next academic year all students, staff and visitors will be able to enjoy a splendid, biodiverse and climate adaptive square. A square where you feel good to be. This is what we are all doing it for!
With this exceptional co-creation we are literally building a sustainable university of applied sciences together.
Unique form of student participation and co-creation
What makes this construction project unique for Saxion is that so many students are involved. No less than 48 students in eleven project groups are contributing to the climate square: from design to realisation. It started with students from the School of Business, Buiding & Technology, but other Saxion schools are also taking part through the Smart Solutions Semester Students from various schools were given the job of thinking up how to communicate about all the different elements comprising the new square.
The climate square is a co-creation of students, schools, Aveco de Bondt, IAA Architects, NTP, Pioneering, Vechtstromen Water Authority and the Saxion Facility Service Organisation.
It’s fantastic that after all the careful preparation, we are now finally going to turn the climate square into reality.
