The Active Learning Space: learning space of the future

Reading time Minutes

What does the ideal classroom of the future look like? What about a learning space that you can redesign yourself thanks to versatile and innovative furniture, with different screens and handy technology for online and hybrid education? This is all possible in an Active Learning Space!

The first spaces have been completed and some Saxion schools have already taken full advantage of these Active Learning Spaces as part of a pilot scheme. Initial reactions of both students and lecturers are positive. See them in this video!

Active Learning Space

The first five spaces were completed and used during academic year 2021-2022. In the run up to academic year 2022-2023 more spaces were completed in Enschede en Deventer. Active Learning Spaces have also been fully equipped at the Centre for Security and Digitalisation (an initiative of Saxion UAS, the Police Academy, University of Twente and the municipality of Apeldoorn).

Further development based on research

Active Learning Spaces are being further developed based on feedback and research. Research is being carried out by the Innovative and Effective Education Research Group to ascertain how much these spaces contribute towards improved learning performance. The research is being led by Dr Tjark Huizinga in collaboration with Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC), School of Health (AGZ) and Saxion Part-time School (SPS).

Initial results show that both lecturers and students make use of at least some of the options available in Active Learning Spaces. Both groups experience the added value of Active Learning Spaces when working in small groups or performing classroom activities. Furthermore, School of Health (AGZ) students experience the options in the learning space as user-friendly. Lecturers indicated that they require technical, didactic and organisational support both before and when working in an Active Learning Space.

Classroom of the Future

The Active Learning Space has been developed as part of the Classroom of the Future project. Recently, work and experimentation has been carried out using a variety of learning spaces. This is in line with some of the principles of the Saxion Educational Philosophy.

Other types of learning space are being developed alongside the Active Learning Space. One example of this is the Do-It-Yourself Recording Studio, a space where at the touch of a button, content can be recorded and distributed through the Saxion video platform. Perfect for short knowledge clips!

This development is financed by Quality commitments.
