Warm Jumper Day at Saxion: wear your heart on your sleeve, every jumper counts!
On Friday, 11 February turn your heating down a degree, dig out and don your warmest jumper and be part of Warm Jumper Day 2022, along with hundreds of thousands of other people in the Netherlands. Saxion also supports this initiative. Do you know how much impact this one single day has on CO₂ emissions? More than you think!
Today is the 16th edition of Warm Jumper Day, an annual event organised by Dutch Climate Alliance (Klimaatverbond Nederland). The organisers call on everyone in the Netherlands to participate. Warm Jumper Day is the perfect opportunity to consider saving energy and how we can all have a big influence on this by acting together. If the whole of the Netherlands turns the heating down by one degree today, then that saves 3.3 million cubic metres of gas and 6.3 million kilogrammes of CO₂. And did you know by doing so we can save the annual energy consumption of three Wadden islands? Pretty impressive.
Even more relevant due to corona
The national coronavirus measures mean that a lot of energy will be lost this winter: more of us are working from home with the heating on all day. Furthermore, many offices and institutions are open, sometimes for just a handful of staff. Yet the heating has to be on there too. In many places in the country windows are wide-open even on freezing cold days. For instance in primary schools. Most outdoor patio heaters used in the hospitality industry consume a lot of energy. These measures and aids may be understandable and useful in the circumstances, but Dutch climate policy is falling behind due to corona measures.
The warm jumper symbolises what we can achieve together
Saxion also calls on students and staff to support Warm Jumper Day. On your part, you can call on your neighbours, colleagues and friends to take part. This can catch on quickly and so raise more awareness. Research shows that 1 out of 5 of those who have taken part in warm jumper day go on to use energy more consciously. The jumper is a symbol of what we can do right now to combat further climate disruption. Join in, act now and put on your warmest, best, cosiest or most original jumper.
