Are you an international student who is in a long-distance relationship? Do you wonder how to celebrate Valentine’s day when you cannot be physically together and go on a real life date? Then these tips for an online date can help you.

Watch a (romantic) movie together

Firstly, you can watch a romantic movie online, which can substantiate your date in a cinema. Using services such as Teleparty, you can synchronize your movie night. Choose a flick from Netflix and use the app’s chat feature to share your reactions. Do not forget to grab your favorite snack and drink to enjoy the night to the fullest!

Online games

Another idea can be to play online games. Even when you’re not physically together, you can still heat up the competition virtually. Jackbox Games has two-player options like Gibbage and Trivia Murder Party, and PlayingCards has synchronized games like Go Fish and chess. Find a comfortable position and enjoy a special game night with your partner.

Virtual restaurant date

For the special occasion like Valentine’s day, you can plan a virtual restaurant date with your partner. Make your favorite cocktails and cook your favorite dishes while talking with each other. You can also order food from similar restaurants and enjoy it together. To spice this dinner date up, you can dress up for each other. For example, you can set a fancy pants night or experiment with the make-up. Think also about your background, set the mood with a jazzy or romantic songs playlist and lots of lit candles. It might feel a bit awkward if you are doing that for the first time, however, you can try to focus on the talk with your loved one and discovering each other even more.

Stargaze together

If you are a romantic couple, you can also stargaze together. We’re all under the same sky and seeing the same stars. Sit out on your deck, get your partner on the phone, and see if you can point out the constellations together. Looking at the same stars from afar will make you feel closer.

You can also add some sparkles to this day and use it for planning your next meeting. It can be a visit to each other’s home or a joint trip to another country. Nothing can be as helpful and exciting as knowing when you can see your partner next time. It is something which you surely would be looking forward to and counting days to the meeting day together.

Presents

Valentines day is also a great occasion to give presents to each other to show your love and care. Of course, nothing cannot substantiate physical presence near each other but presents can cheer up and provide comfort in the times when you miss each other. You can use following ideas for original presents that you can send to each other:

  • A collage with matching pictures. Put your photography and Photoshop skills to the test by meshing together two separately taken pictures in completely different locations. You can play around with poses, objects, and scenery to create an artistic version of a photo you two would have taken if you were physically together.
  • If you’re a big Words of Affirmation couple, journaling might be something for you. Use it as a method to check in with your partner on Valentine’s Day. You can keep the diary where each of you writes something you appreciate about the other every day—then share it with each other on Valentine’s Day.
  • Send a care package. There’s a cute couples shopping challenge where each person buys items from the same list—think favorite snack, favorite color, or an item that reminds you of them. Set a budget, make your list, go shopping, and then exchange on Zoom or FaceTime, revealing one item at a time. After, pack up the goodies and send them out to your partner.
  • Record a special video message. Whether you’re singing and dancing to your song or reading a heartfelt love note out loud, sometimes it can be so much more intimate and lovely for your partner to see and hear you rather than reading something themselves.
  • You can also send your loved one something handmade. A gift doesn’t need to be expensive to be good. A heartfelt card, photo album, or any gift you’ve made yourself shows you put time and thought into it and will serve as a reminder of how much you care even when you’re not physically together.
  • Give your partner a bunch of letters. Long-distance relationships are as hard as they sound, and spending holidays like Valentine’s Day apart make them even harder. Fill envelopes with small gifts and sweet letters to cheer up your loved one based on how they’re feeling at that moment. Label the outside of each envelope with instructions of when to open them, like “for when you’re missing me” and “for when you’re feeling lonely.”
  • If you have friends or relatives in the city where you partner lives, you can also send a package full of goodies, sweets and love notes to them and ask friends or relatives to deliver out the gifts all over your significant other’s home. They’ll be shocked to find handwritten letters and thoughtful surprises from you.

Finally, remember that long-distance relationship is for surely not easy, however with trust and open communication with each other you can work it out and enjoy holidays together! Try, experience and see what works best for you during this journey!
