Introduction

The textile business and production take place in a truly global setting. Graduates from the studies of Textile Engineering and Management should therefore feel at home in an international environment. In this dynamic branch of trade it is not only the use of textile in clothing and fashion that matters, but also its use in interior decoration and more and more in the applications of Technical Textiles.

Modern textiles are increasingly being developed by applying engineering to properties: reasoning from the demands of customers, new fibres are developed in cooperation with e.g. the chemical industry, and other, new features are added by applying e.g. nanotechnology. Therefore, in this context, we call these Functional Materials.

In addition, textiles can often be found on the cutting edge of several disciplines. For example, the combination with electronics leads to Smart and Intelligent Textiles. Particularly textiles used in sportswear and protective wear are pioneers in this field. Artificial grass is a textile product that is used by, among others, landscape architects. In architecture, more and more textiles are used in the form of low-weight constructions in reinforced concrete or ultralight and decorative roofings. And these were only a few examples.

The production facilities are often situated far from the consumer markets. Therefore, our studies are commercial- and business-oriented. International purchasing and sales activities will comprise an important part of the graduates’ job responsibilities. Textile markets are strongly cyclical. Therefore, project management is an important part of the studies.

Course content

The course specifically aims at the most recent developments in materials and technology. Smart and intelligent textiles form an important subject in theory and in projects. Research into innovative possibilities of new technologies for new products in new markets is its common theme. A thesis on (market) research in this interesting field is part of the curriculum. Strategy and change management make up the necessary tools for this purpose.

Quarter 1 Quarter 2 Quarter 3 Quarter 4
Smart functional materials (6) Project Smart Functional Materials (4)
Materials & Processes (9) Project Innovation (6) Strategy and Change-management (8) Business simulation (6)
Thesis Research (6) Thesis 1 (3) Thesis 2 (3) Thesis 3 (9)

For the supervision of these projects, many hours are available for coaching and consulting. In addition, the projects will be divided into smaller pieces, which are all concluded by a go / no go moment. The credits will only be granted after finishing the complete module.

Specific Requirements

A minimum of three years of foreign higher education (leading to a bachelor degree) in Textiles or a closely related field. Application to be assessed by the Faculties’ Exam board (result final and binding).

Career prospects

After graduation, the Bachelor in Textile Engineering and Management operates in the interesting field, on the boundaries of market, design and production, in what we call ‘the golden triangle’. The jobs will often be commercial (purchasing and sales), but because of the global distribution of production activities in the textile branch, knowledge of characteristics of fabrics and textile technology is crucial when negotiating about features and costs. Our graduates are optimally prepared for this job.
The volume of the world trade in textiles and related products is still increasing.
